Are we committed to sound environmental principles? YOU BET!
The directors of MP Media, John Paoloni and Keri Balding are committed to sound environmental principles, both in the workplace and at home. How? Our brand new office was designed and constructed ourselves (yep-that's right!) and we wanted to ensure that it had low energy needs, both in construction and day to day running. As we are in a cold climate in the upper Blue Mountains of NSW all windows and doors are doubled glazed. All walls have R2 insulation and the ceiling has a triple layer of insulation with 100mm air gap to increase effectiveness (achieves around R8 level). Our floor has actually 2 floors - sandwiched between them is a layer of additional insulation and air gap - again to improve efficiency. The office is positioned north to achieve solar gain during the day - even on a 8 degree day if the sun is shining we need no additional heating (although we have the latest technology heat pump with an efficiency rating of 4:1). In summer we rely on the cooling breezes from our surrounding natives trees that we have planted after rehabilitating our 1100 sq m block (was home to blackberry, lantana, broom and almost every other environmental weed you could imagine). Our land surrounding our office is now home to local native species of blue tongue lizards, an amazing array of birdlife, frogs, antechinus and the odd snake. Suspended walkways link our office to the outside world (ie our driveway) to lessen the footprint of our development. We have solar panels and we use only 100% green energy supplied from the nearby Hampton Wind Farm. And the office sits on top of our water tank! - 75,000 litres, which provides all of our water requirements and also gives us an enormous amount of thermal mass to help regulate the internal temperature of our office. All lighting is low energy - not a halogen bulb in sight. |
